Officials are critical to the success of boccia and the experience of our athletes. Refereeing is deeply rewarding way to contribute to boccia.
How to become a Boccia Australia Accredited Referee
There are two levels of accreditation within Boccia Australia for Referees:
Level 1 Accreditation enables referees to referee at Social, Local and State Competitions.
Level 2 Accreditation enables referees to referee at Social, Local, State, plus National Competitions.
International Refereeing Accreditation is only available through BISFed.

1. Become a Boccia Australia Member, if you aren't already.
Go to: Boccia Australia Membership
Membership is currently free.
2. Complete the Sport Aus AIS Course: Introductory Level Officiating General Principles
On completion of this prerequisite course, email a copy of your certificate to referee@boccia.com.au with a cover letter stating your Boccia experience (how long and in what capacity.)
3. Complete Boccia Referee Course Level 1 - Theory
This consists of five modules. Please start from module 1 and work your way down to 5. To begin click on the Introduction module to register and begin your journey into becoming a boccia referee. You will need to re-register before commencing each module.
Each module consists of a PowerPoint Presentation document, followed by an exam. A 100% pass rate for all modules is required. Multiple attempts will be permitted if necessary. After completing the modules 1 - 4 and their online exams, please wait for the head referee to confirm if you have passed. You may then register to complete the final theory module 5 in the level 1 referee course. If you haven't achieved 100% in any of the exams, you will be asked to repeat the necessary exam module until you have all the answers 100% correct. The Head Referee will advise when you can progress to the final stages.
On completion of all 5 theory modules and the practical processes in the Boccia Referee Course Level 1, you will receive a certificate stating you are a Boccia Australia Accredited Level 1 Referee as well as a Boccia Australia Level 1 name tag.
4. Practical component - Part 1
All referees should keep a record of the games they referee as a confirmation of their experience, by completing a log book. Once you have officiated 6 local games please contact referee@boccia.com.au in order to organise part 2 of your practical component. You will need to show your log book at the practical component.
5. Practical component - Part 2
This consists of an observation of on-court competencies, to ensure theory can be put into practice. It will be carried out by an accredited referee (nominated by the Boccia Australia Head Referee) at a Boccia Australia competition.
6. Final Exam
This follows the observation and consists of 40 multiple choice questions. An 80% pass rate is required. Upon passing the Head Referee will provide you with your level 1 Accredited Referee certificate as well as your name tag.
Boccia Referee Course Level 2
You must have completed the Level 1 course, 1 year prior to progressing onto Level 2 Accreditation, but no later than 2 years previously. You must also have maintained your log book to present evidence of refereeing at least 10 additional games (all classifications) since completing your Level 1 Accreditation at Boccia Australia competitions, to also include at least one State Titles.

Please provide a copy of your level 1 Accreditation certificate along with your log book to referee@boccia.com.au in order to gain access to begin the Boccia Referee Level 2 Course.

3. Practical component - Part 1

Once you have officiated an additional 10 games please contact referee@boccia.com.au in order to organise part 2 of your practical component. You will need to show your log book at the practical component.
NB you will have officiated at least 20 games at State or National level before you become a Level 2 Referee.
4. Practical component - Part 2
Be observed refereeing in all classifications by the Boccia Australia Head Referee (or designated nominee) at a National or State competition and deemed to be working at Level 2.
5. Final Exam
This follows the observation and consists of 40 multiple choice questions. An 80% pass rate is required. On completion of the Boccia Referee Course Level 2, you will receive a certificate stating you are a Boccia Australia Accredited Level 2 Referee as well as a Boccia Australia Level 2 name tag.
To maintain Level 2 accreditation, within 2 years of completing the course you need to have refereed at:
- One state competition (refereeing all classifications) with a minimum of 6 games, as evidenced in log book AND
-
One national competition (refereeing all classifications) with a minimum of 10 games, as evidenced in log book.
International Refereeing Accreditation is only available through BISFed.
Interested Level 2 referees with experience at more than two State and one National Competition should watch the World Boccia (BISFed) website as new courses will be announced there. There are 2 methods of attending:
- Boccia Australia would pay for the training costs including flights and accommodation of anyone the HR recommended. The Head Referee would make the decision on who should be recommended based on the need for higher training for Referees in each state. On return, the Referee is asked to commit to attending at least 3 State titles in 2 years, and one National possibly at their own expense.
- Experienced Level 2 Referees could apply and pay their own expenses to attend a course. BA may be able to pay the course fee.
